Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking an experienced Civil Engineering Technologist or Technician for our Fargo, ND location. This position will focus on projects related to solid waste management (i.e. recycling and processing facilities, landfills, transfer stations, compost sites, industrial bi-product management, etc.) and will perform construction observations and documentation during the construction season and will assist with preparation of construction plans and specifications during the off-season. The ideal candidate would have the ability to perform duties including construction observations, documenting observations with field notes, interpreting construction plans and specifications, coordinating field survey work, and exhibiting positive contractor and client relations in the office and the field. The candidate would be experienced in computer aided design and drafting (CADD) to develop construction plan sets, figures, and related documents.

Our Fargo office is comprised of a multidisciplinary team and this position offers the right person opportunities to work on a broad range of projects in addition to solid waste work, pending workload and staff availability. Water, municipal, community development, and environment/natural resources related projects are also potential opportunities within this location.

Your Key Responsibilities

Assist civil engineers with collecting field data, planning, and managing private and public infrastructure projects.

Observes and reviews projects during construction to monitor conformance with plans, specifications, and other codes and regulations.

Performs field testing and collects field measurements

Document construction activities, progress, and correspondence

Monitors the progress of construction activities ensuring cost, schedule and quality standards are met.

Communicates with and makes recommendations to Project Manager, design professionals, client, owner, developer, or contractor, but does not direct the means or methods of construction.

Provides the Project Manager with updates on project progress or delays to client, design professionals, and/or contractor.

Reviews and evaluates plans and specifications to ensure designs are practical for construction.

Reviews change orders and field orders for reasonableness of pricing and constructability.

Manages deadlines, prioritizes assignments, and prepares final documentation reports.

Collaborate in various processes: requests for information, submittals, construction schedules, shop drawings and pay applications (QA/QC).

Collect soil and groundwater samples; perform field screening as applicable

Perform field nuclear density and moisture testing.

Assist with field related survey tasks to obtain boundary, topography, GIS data collection, geodetic control, etc.

Assists with the development of a design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.

Utilizes technologies in development of three-dimensional models of civil systems.

Coordinates with other disciplines to ensure compatibility with the design intent.

Prepare technical documents using MS Word, and Excel


Your Capabilities and Credentials

Competent in knowledge of construction principles, techniques and procedures, occupational hazards and safety precautions.

Ability to effectively discuss project issues with contractor, project team and clients, including ability to resolve conflict situations.

Takes initiative on tasks and in coordinating with other members of the project team, obtaining and sharing necessary information.

Strong organizational skills and understanding of task assignment and schedule.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to solve problems using sound professional judgment, creativity, and innovation.

Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.

Ability to interpret sketches, drawings, and other similar material.

Proficiency in Autodesk Civil 3D and Microsoft Office Suite, as well as relevant software programs which may include Civil3D, GIS or other technical software..

Experience with nuclear density gauges is preferable

Experience with utilizing a tablet and various applications to promote paperless documentation procedures is preferable

Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and clean driving record

Ability to work extended hours, including weekends, to accommodate schedules

Ability to travel to other offices and project sites, including extended overnight stays out of town or out of state, as needed; field work may take place in remote locations with minimal amenities available

Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather and terrain conditions

Ability to lift approximately 50 lbs. and do repetitive work such as lifting, bending and standing for long periods of time

Education and Experience

Technical degree/diploma/certificate or equivalent in related field; or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Minimum of 6-8 years of experience.

Position will work in the field on active construction sites; field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time.
