The Crane & Rigging Supervisor will provide services to LBL office and research facilities for over 4,000 engineers, scientists, students, and support staff. The scope includes over 100 buildings, supporting infrastructure, and site utilities. Your role is to provide leadership and technical direction to the assigned union craft shop in the Facilities Division / Site Utilities & Maintenance Department in the execution of all rigging, crane and lift operations. You will ensure appropriate staff safety, levels, training, and qualifications for rigging and lift operations. This position supports the planning and execution of rigging and lifting tasks to ensure work is performed safely and efficiently. Work control documents are planned and managed in the Lab’s Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), MAXIMO. This position routinely interacts with facility area managers, customers, other supervisors, planners, and schedulers to coordinate work activities and meet Facilities Division and LBL goals.

Berkeley Lab is located above UC Berkeley, on 202 acres that house over two million square feet of state-of-the-art scientific centers and support facilities. The Lab’s mission encompasses many scientific fields, and its buildings include supercomputing facilities, genetic sequencing labs, laser labs, microscope facilities, and office complexes.   • Ensure Integrated Safety Management process and procedure implementation, appropriate PPE for identified hazards and routine inspections. Perform causal analysis for safety related incidents.
  • Supervise and coordinate activities of union workers engaged in erecting and operating machines to hoist and convey machinery and equipment with expert knowledge of crane operations, load charts, critical lifts, and crane limitations. Specify locations for movement and erection of hoists, cranes, bridge cranes, and forklifts using knowledge of various methods of sliding, lifting, and rigging equipment.
  • Remain current with latest lifting technology systems.
  • Establish and implement a clean, uncluttered, and safe worksite.
  • Supervise daily activities spending a minimum of 50% time on jobs for front line support and oversight of work management, safety practices, and DOE contract compliance.
  • Assign daily craft specific work activities on the approved schedule and set expectations for working lead oversight/coordination of daily work.
  • Perform pre-job briefings prior to the start of work per Facilities expectations and procedures.
  • Ensure qualifications for assigned crafts/discipline are current with position task books.
  • Ensure required training for assigned crafts is completed to maintain qualifications.
  • Participate in job walk down to plan and identify job scope, identifying hazards, implement hazards controls, means and methods for performing work.
  • Evaluate and provide feedback on work control documents related to the accuracy of scheduled resources, tools/parts, safety requirements and instructions to execute work.
  • SME and Approver for the procurement of Crane, Hoist, Slings, Spreader Bars and all below the hook equipment.
  • Oversee Crane and Rigging contractors as required. Review and approve PM, Crane repairs and modifications, in accordance with 29 CFR 1926.1434.
  • Approve lift plans, inspect the equipment prior to lift, and complete pre-task safety briefs.
  • Qualify as the trainer for LBNL Overhead Cranes and Equipment.
  • Perform duties as a member of the High Consequence High-Value Critical Lift Committee.
  • Support load testing as directed in support of the crane & hoist inspection and certification program.
  • Work with Engineering and customers to design, layout, and install new equipment.
  • Interface daily with Facilities Facility Area Managers to ensure in-house and contracted services are delivered in accordance with customer specifications, LBNL policies and procedures, and DOE contract requirements.
  • Communicate clear and objective performance expectations for assigned craft that are in alignment with organizational procedures and management expectations, and manage performance to expectations.
  • Provide regular feedback to assigned craft, continually develop skills, coach and mentor assigned craft to ensure work is executed as expected, conduct performance appraisals, and administer discipline.
  • Provide leadership and support of ongoing improvement initiatives within and/or related to Facilities and Services.
  • Ensure craft regular and overtime hours are managed in accordance with union contract requirements. Establish and communicate overtime schedules.
  • Develop and improve standard operating procedures to promote consistency in lifting / rigging activities.
  • Establish and maintain performance metrics to measure the effectiveness of the assigned craft group.
  • Work closely with facilities managers, construction managers, project managers, planners and schedulers, crafts, maintenance supervisors and other staff to meet Facilities Division/Operations and Lab goals.
  • Promote a professional work environment with established LBL objectives, policies, procedures and plans.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of work planning, risk assessment, controls, union contract requirements, OSHA requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ demonstrated experience leading teams in a complex industrial plant, laboratory facility, or corporate campus with multiple buildings, within a collective bargaining environment.
  • A minimum of 10 years’ demonstrated experience in crane and rigging operations within mission-critical facilities.
  • Demonstrated rigging and setting of high-value equipment and critical lifts (i.e. semi-conductor tools, bio-pharma skids, food processing equipment, scientific equipment, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability and knowledge to develop critical lifting plans for high-value equipment, compliant with federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Requires full knowledge and functional responsibility for proper operations of forklifts up to 15-ton capacity and mobile cranes up to 60-ton capacity; Operate overhead cranes up to 30-ton capacity using both pendant control and overhead cab controls.
  • Requires full knowledge of telehandler / grade-all operations.
  • Have knowledge of Certified Crane Operator License (CCO License).
  • Demonstrated experience with a CMMS – Maximo preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with lift planning software.
  • Completion of trades apprenticeship, relevant associate’s degree, or military service equivalent.
  • Skilled in conflict resolution, balancing workloads, and changing priorities under challenging conditions such as emergency repairs, power outages or natural disasters.
  • Experience in the coordination of construction and maintenance rigging projects.
  • Broad knowledge of relevant codes and safety regulations pertaining to rigging and crane operation.
  • Highly skilled communicator both verbally and in writing. Ability to employ computer applications such as Google Suite, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Maximo, and Rigging / Lifting software.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively with a diverse team.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

  • BA/BS from an accredited university or equivalent knowledge and work experience.
  • Root cause analysis experience
