The Director, Tax Planning is a high-visibility tax executive with responsibility for evaluating the U.S. federal and state income tax consequences of strategic business transactions and legislative developments, making well-informed recommendations to senior management, and creating value through responsible but creative tax analysis. The director is a trusted advisor to senior management, a team player, and promotes an atmosphere of ethics, compliance, and innovative thinking.

The ability to work remotely within the United States may be available based on business need. This option is not available in the states of California, Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon or Washington at this time.

Responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing existing and proposed tax statutes and regulations
  • Conducting complex tax research
  • Documenting and defending tax return positions
  • Delivering positive financial results through the design and implementation of tax planning strategies
  • Collaborating with departments and business units throughout the company, including Controllers, Legal, Business Development, Ethics & Compliance, External Affairs, and Rates
  • Providing tax analysis and recommendations for scenario planning, strategic transactions, and sensitive compliance issues

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and JD or CPA is required
  • Minimum 10 years related work combined corporate tax experience is required in large law firm, Big 4 accounting firm, and/or public company corporate tax department
  • Demonstrated experience leading/managing direct reports
  • Demonstrated project-management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrated experience implementing tax planning strategies
  • Able to build effective working relationships and collaborate with all levels of employees and management across the organization
  • Experience working as part of multi-disciplinary teams on large projects or transactions
  • Skill to master both the big picture as well as the details
  • Broad experience in federal income tax, including consolidated returns; reorganizations and restructuring; net operating losses; tax credits; and capitalization vs. expense issues
  • Firm understanding of state income tax apportionment methods, federal conformity issues, and unitary filing concepts
  • Highest standards of business conduct and ethical behavior
  • Exemplary leadership skills
  • Role models and reinforces the FE Values & Behaviors
  • Exceptional verbal communication skills – able to synthesize and explain complex tax concepts; persuasive writing skills
  • Experience writing tax opinions or technical memoranda to document tax positions and/or reserve analysis, preferred
  • Tax controversy / audit defense experience, preferred
  • Experience speaking / presenting tax issues to key stakeholders, such as clients, management team, committees of the board of directors, etc., preferred
  • Understanding of ASC 740 income tax accounting concepts, including FIN 48 uncertain tax position reserve analysis, preferred
  • Experience with utility / energy industry tax issues, preferred
