As a faculty member in the Department of Music, the successful candidate will be an active member of the department in terms of teaching, research or creative activities, and service, and contribute to a collegial work environment. Evaluation for reappointment, tenure, and promotion (RTP) is through the Department of Music.
As Director for the Center for African Diaspora Sacred Music and Musicians (CADSMM) the successful candidate will engage in activities that support the three core objectives of advancing the scholarship, performance, and preservation of Negro spiritual music as well as advancing community engagement and appreciation. He or she will report to the Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities in his or her role as the Director of CADSMM.
The successful candidate will be either an ethnomusicologist, with a research background in Negro spiritual music and/or a choral music specialist, with a specialty in Negro spiritual music. The Center will build on the existing strengths of three programs: the Music Department, the University Archives and the Africana Studies Department, supporting cross-unit collaboration. The Center director will serve as an ex-officio member of the CADSMM Advisory Committee.
As a faculty member in the Department of Music:
- Teach one class per semester (e.g. Music 302 (African American Music).
- Direct and conduct the CSUDH Jubilee Choir and other choral ensemble performances.
- Develop new curriculum, as appropriate, in the areas of African American/Negro Spiritual music.
- Develop and engage in research, and scholarly and creative activities in Music, choral production, Negro spiritual music, etc., leading to conference presentations and publications.
- Advise and mentor students.
- Serve on department, college, and university committees.
- Participate in service to the department, college, university, and community.
As Director of the Center for African Diaspora Sacred Music and Musicians (CADSMM):
- Partner with the Gerth Archives & Special Collections to acquire and preserve archival materials related to Negro Spiritual music.
- Coordinate financial support for critical archival tasks such as preservation, cataloguing (e.g., creation of finding aids), and digitization of materials, through grant and philanthropic activities.
- Produce choral performances of Negro spiritual music both on and off campus, including by the CSUDH Jubilee Choir and the partner organization, the Albert McNeil Jubilee Singers, as well as festivals.
- Coordinate commissions and performances of new choral works within the tradition of Negro Spiritual music.
- Provide coordination and support for visiting artists who will lead master classes and conduct choral concerts.
- Direct and conduct the CSUDH Jubilee Choir, which includes weekly rehearsals and on and off campus performances.
- Seek travel grant funding for graduate students and visiting scholars to utilize archival materials located at CSUDH.
- Support the organization of scholarly meetings on Negro Spiritual music, including presentations, combination lecture/performances, symposia, conferences, and the publication of conference proceedings.
- Continue development and support for a robust website with resources for scholars, community members, and choral groups, including links to materials in the University Archives.
- Submit applications and proposals for external grants and contracts, (for example, from private donors, foundations, and government agencies such as Cal Humanities, the NEH, and the NEA).
- Engage in additional activities that directly or indirectly support the scholarship, performance, and preservation of Negro Spiritual music, including, for example, collecting oral histories, student scholarships, supporting a scholarly journal, newsletters, lectures, podcasts, films and videos, equipment purchases, and community engagement.
- Doctorate in Music, Musicology, or Ethnomusicology by start of appointment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of African American Music or music of the African diaspora.
- Demonstrated extensive experience directing and conducting a choir.
- College or university-level teaching experience.
- Demonstrated scholarship related to Negro Spiritual music.
- Demonstrated potential for successful research and publication.
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduates from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.
- Demonstrated experience collaborating with individuals and/or groups for effective outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to manage projects according to expected outcomes and deadlines.
- Demonstrated ability to seek and acquire external funding for the Center’s core goals.
- Experience directing a music-related program or center.
- Ability to manage a budget.
- Ability to promote and pursue community partnerships for the Center.
Employment Requirement – Background Check
Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
