Job description: Position Summary

This position is for the Brine Chemistry Consortium of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Rice University. BCC is a joint industrial research project supported by the oil and gas industries ( The individual will conduct experimental and computation research in oilfield scale and corrosion control of mineral salts. The ideal candidate should have strong background in experimental research, versed in the aquatic and geochemistry, self-motivated and genuinely interested in academic and industrial research. A strong background in physical chemistry and computation is desired. The candidate should also demonstrate strong communication skill in research presentation.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts experimental research in oilfield scale and corrosion control of mineral salts
  • Develops thermodynamic and kinetic models to fit the laboratory observations for field applications.
  • Publishes papers and present findings at national and international conferences
  • Mentors and trains junior research team members, such as PhD candidates, master’s students and undergraduates
  • Assists with proposal development to obtain research funding
  • Supports project management and collaboration across institutions or disciplines
  • Performs all other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental chemistry, geochemistry, or related field
  • Demonstrates strong communication skill in research presentation
  • Demonstrated knowledge in analytical instrumentations, such as, ICP-OES, IC, ESEM/EDS, XRD, XPS, TEM, DLS, UV-vis, EQCM, FT-IR, NMR
  • Some skill in geochemical, statistics, chemical engineering and graphic Software: PhreeQC, Visual Minteq, SAS, SPSS, Origin, PVTsim
  • Knowledge in programming language: Excel VBA, MATLAB
  • Possess a strong background in experimental research
  • Strong background in physical and aquatic chemistry
  • Some background in corrosion, materials characterization, electrochemistry, CO2 capture, fluid mechanics
  • Self-motivated and genuinely interested in academic and industrial research
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to present in group meetings and conferences
  • Enthusiasm for leadership, assisting team members and creating a collaborative working environment
  • Ability to work independently, collaboratively, and professionally
