Job description: The Department of International Health is seeking a Science Writer who will provide communications and technical writing support to several immunization advocacy projects at IVAC focusing on translating and synthesizing technical scientific content into written materials suitable for a range of stakeholders and audiences.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide support for the development of a literature review and series of advocacy briefs and evidence summaries focusing on a variety of themes identified by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance addressing the topic of zero-dose children.
  • Develop evidence summaries, advocacy/policy briefs, reports, infographics, op-eds, blog posts, presentations, fact sheets, news items, press releases, and manuscripts.
  • The development of these materials will often entail collaboration with subject matter experts, conducting reviews of peer-reviewed literature and grey literature, and development of dissemination plans for written materials.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related technical/scientific field with 1 year related writing experience, or Bachelor’s Degree in a non-technical/scientific field with 2 years related writing experience.
  • Training in a field related to journalism, communications, or public health, previous experience with scientific communication, ability to independently conduct literature reviews and subject matter expert interviews, ability to provide a portfolio of examples of previous scientific communication work.
  • Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree.
  • Currently or previously enrolled in a graduate level scientific writing or communications program.
  • Graduate work in public health and/or scientific writing.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English.
  • Translating complex, technical information into accessible materials independently without oversight.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
