What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Cybersecurity Technical Staff 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Cybersecurity Technical Staff 2 $87,200 – $142,500

Exciting opportunity to be part of the LANL enterprise patching and configuration management team managing the Red Hat Network Satellite Server (RHNSS) operations. RHNSS services approximately 2,000+ Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) workstations and servers on four different networks (unclassified, classified, and public facing). You will join a team of highly skilled professionals that manage a variety of enterprise-scale endpoint management services with great opportunities for growth and collaboration. You will work in the Network and Infrastructure Engineering Division supporting a computing environment scaling from “desktop to teraflops,” a diverse and challenging network environment unavailable anywhere else.

Work duties will include:

Third tier customer support for the RHNSS service and the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OS

System administration of the core production RHNSS servers including a caching RHNSS proxy, connected, disconnected (air-gapped), and development and test systems. This includes:

Installation, patching, configuration, and maintenance of the underlying operating system

Installation, configuration and maintenance of server hardware required by the service

Creating and maintaining appropriate backups

Installation, patching, configuration, and maintenance of the RHNSS application

Performance tuning of the application and operating system

Monitoring load and resource consumption

Reviewing logs for indications of application issues and security problems

Following and refining change control processes

Administration, configuration and monitoring of access controls to protect the system and application

Manage the enterprise wide patch distribution process for the Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system including

Delivering update content to test

Promoting from test to production

Replicating content to air-gapped networks

Working with Red Hat support personnel to resolve issues affecting the LANL environment

Creating scripts and programs to automate routine processes using Bash, Python, and Perl

Assisting with building and maintaing custom RPMs for COTS and custom software

Provide LANL developed and 3rd party packages to managed RHEL clients/servers via custom content channels

Collaborate on testing, evaluating, planning, and deploying next generations of Satellite Server and RHEL versions

Collaborate with Quality Assurance team to ensure that issues are identified pro-actively before they impact operations

Cybersecurity Technical Staff 3 $105,700 – $176,400

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level job duties will include:

Provides technical direction and/or guidance to junior staff, if assigned. Provides technical guidance to diverse teams for organizational initiatives.

Study, Propose, Architect and Deploy new solutions for patching and monitoring Linux workstations and servers not running RHEL

Lead process automation and documentation efforts for the RHNSS and related services

Work with the Linux platform technical lead to develop and refine Linux OS and RHEL strategy

Lead testing, evaluation, planning, and deployment of next generations of Satellite Server and RHEL versions

Work with the Linux platform lead to evaluate new OS revisions and study impact on existing services

Help to represent LANL’s interests in product futures discussions with vendors

Act as an Enterprise wide resource for Linux software packaging, patching and centralized configuration management issues

What You Need Minimum Job Requirements:

Red Hat Linux or related Linux distribution systems administration and security configuration experience

Technical diagnostic expertise including problem investigation, reproduction, and resolution skills

Ability to read and edit scripts in Bash, Python, or other languages

Ability to provide superior customer support and document technical issues

Ability to work in unclassified and classified environments

Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research on technical issues

The ability to package software in the RPM format

Desired Skills (CSTS-2) (skills that are nice to have, but not necessary)

Experience administering a Red Hat Network Satellite Server

Familiarity with at least one Linux distribution other than Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Familiarity with at least one relational database system (MySQL, Postgres, Oracle, etc.)

Demonstrated experience working with Virtualization (VMWare, KVM, Virtual Box)

Experience with Kickstart installations and Anaconda installer

Familiarity with RHEL DISA STIG or NIST USGCB

Linux Administration or Security relevant certification:

GIAC Security Essentials (GSEC)

Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA)

Additional Job Requirements for Cybersecurity Technical Staff 3:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

Expert level Linux systems administration knowledge

Demonstrated ability to work with personnel across organizational boundaries

Ability to architect solutions that are or include UNIX/Linux systems in an enterprise environment

Demonstrated experience administrating applications with relational database back-ends

Demonstrated ability to create and modify complex shell scripts in Bash, Python, or Perl

Demonstrated ability to mentor and direct junior staff

Desired Skills (CSTS-3) (skills that are nice to have, but not necessary)

Advanced knowledge of at least one relational database system (MySQL, Postgres, Oracle, etc)

Experience administering a Red Hat Network Satellite Server

Advanced knowledge of at least one virtualization technology including VMWare, Virtual Box or KVM

Advanced understanding of SELinux and the ability to manage file contexts.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a bachelor’s degree (master’s preferred) in a technical field and a minimum of 4 years’ related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level post graduate work may be expected.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field and a minimum of 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level post graduate work may be expected.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos with the potential for teleworking from a location within 2 hours ground commute of this location. Reporting onsite will be periodically required. Telework is at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
