JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: HIGH SCHOOL SPECIAL EDUCATION (INTENSIVE ROOM)
REPORTS TO: PRINCIPAL / ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

JOB PURPOSE: Be part of a building team that plans a program of instruction for students with significant disabilities using a variety of methodology including direct instruction, classroom and community based functional skills training.

Requirements: * Current State of Alaska certificate with special education endorsement.

  • Preference given for experience working with high school students.

Duties, Responsibilities and Accountabilities: * Provide instruction and programs that meets students’ individual needs, abilities and interest.

  • Develop students’ functional life, academic, social, and pre-vocational skills.
  • Assume duties such as testing, IEP writing, maintaining case files and records.
  • Must be able to conduct parent and teacher conferences and run effective, well organized meetings.
  • Create individual student, paraprofessional and related services schedules.
  • Must be able to deal with a wide variety of student behavior with pro-active positive behavior plans.
  • Must be able to effectively provide program direction to paraprofessionals.
  • Keep informed of current developments in the field of Special Education.
  • Maintain program records to meet district, state and federal requirements.
  • Actively participate in school wide RTI and PBA programs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general educational periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, State and Federal Grants, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff, and parents.

Mathematical Skill: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Problem Solving: Can identify and resolves problems in a timely manner. Gathers and analyzes information skillfully. Develops alternative solutions. Works well in group problem solving situations. Uses reason even when dealing with emotional topics.

Project Management: Develops and coordinates projects. Clearly communicates project plans, progress, and changes. Completes projects on time. Manages project activities and teams.

Interpersonal Skills: Focuses on solving conflict and not blaming. Maintains confidentiality. Listens to others without interrupting. Keeps emotions under control and remains open to other ideas and tries new things.

Teamwork: Balances team and individual responsibilities. Exhibits objectivity and openness to others’ views. Gives and welcomes feedback. Contributes to building a positive team spirit. Puts success of team above own interests. Able to build morale and group commitments to goals and objectives. Supports everyone’s efforts to succeed.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk or hear. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands and interact with the public and other staff.
